Diabetic foot care

People diagnosed with diabetes are at risk of having problems with their feet. These problems can include foot ulcers or infections. In the worst cases, complications with your feet can lead to an amputation. Diabetes causes one amputation every hour in the UK. Therefore, looking after your feet is very important. Taking care of your feet might feel like a big job but these problems can be avoided with regular footcare.

‘Why am I at risk?’

Raised blood sugars, raised cholesterol (blood fats) and high blood pressure can affect the feelings in your feet, this is known as peripheral neuropathy. In addition, this can also cause problems with blood flow to your feet meaning cuts, sore and blisters will not heal as quickly.

At Mona Lisa podiatry clinic we recommend routine podiatry/chiropody at 4–12 weeks interval (depending on your foot risk and self-care compliance) and a thorough diabetic foot assessment in line with the National institute for health and care excellence (NICE Guidelines)
